block on character names similar to reward givers (in General)

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] June 24 2009 4:35 PM EDT

can we block players from naming themselves similar the reward drop messages? i know this may kill the fun of some very bored teenagers, but this is just annoying.

QBRanger June 24 2009 4:39 PM EDT

Pfft,

If someone wants to name themselves after Mandos, I have no problem.

It is the spam which I do.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] June 24 2009 4:52 PM EDT

I logged on, and laughed!

I could see it getting annoying if I got a CM or 10 every day, but that was funneh!

Thank you Mandos!

Now, where's my +4 Spellboosters? :P

QBRanger June 24 2009 5:08 PM EDT

I thought CMs were just as good as the public record. Not fulfilling your obligations on a CM is punishable just as breaking one in the Public Record.

Please send the Spellboosters to my main character or I will have to ask an Admin for a possible fine/reset.

Cube June 24 2009 5:34 PM EDT

Blocks are always a waste of time, that's why there aren't any swear filters on the forums.
Someone will just name themselves Mand0s

QBJohnnywas June 24 2009 5:36 PM EDT

Just get an admin to rename anybody that does it. I'm sure we can provide a list of suitable names for them.

BHT June 24 2009 5:43 PM EDT

That was a good prank, but still I got really excited thinking I got lucky and got some SB's that I needed. Jerk.

three4thsforsaken June 24 2009 5:45 PM EDT

hey, you're only going to be tricked once, it's not really something that is going to reoccur I presume

FailBoat[SG] [Forever Alone] June 24 2009 7:20 PM EDT

Still, pulling this prank on a multitude of people should be fineable...

kevlar June 24 2009 8:02 PM EDT

lol, great prank! >:)

{Wookie}-Jir.Vr- June 24 2009 8:39 PM EDT

=) Sorry if I hurt anyone's feelings, I got a laugh out of it, and based on CM responses about 90% of the people I 'pranked' got a laugh out of it too.

So far only Ranger didn't fall for it. >P

winner winner June 24 2009 8:41 PM EDT

I didn't fall for it...

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] June 24 2009 8:45 PM EDT

nor did i, unless you call a sincere longing for an ignore feature "falling for it." ; )

{Wookie}-Jir.Vr- June 24 2009 8:54 PM EDT

If you didn't 'fall for it' then why are you so upset? =) Jeez, you act like I sent you a wall of text, or 50 CMs. I sent you one cm with two lines of text. So common sense dictates that you fell for it, and now you're upset for falling for it.

So far there are two people whining and seemingly upset, and everyone else, of the LARGE list of people I sent it to, took it at face value, got a laugh, and moved on.

Geez. I wonder sometimes why some people are incapable of having a little fun.

Soul Eater June 24 2009 8:56 PM EDT

How come I wasn't pranked?

FailBoat[SG] [Forever Alone] June 24 2009 9:01 PM EDT

"Taking it at face value" would mean there was a +4 Pair of SBs in their inventory when they logged in. And there isn't. So they have a right to be upset.

{Wookie}-Jir.Vr- June 24 2009 9:02 PM EDT

Sorry Soul, I mainly was sending it to people who were fighting at the time, and a few people who I knew would get a kick out of it, and a few people who I knew would whine and bring attention to it, and make the whole situation even more funny.

The only downside for me is that I'm stuck with 'mandos' for 30 days :(.

Pwned June 24 2009 9:03 PM EDT

it was funny don't know why people are making such a fuss about it

Soul Eater June 24 2009 9:04 PM EDT

lol, well I think it's pretty funny too.

BootyGod June 24 2009 9:18 PM EDT

*shrugs* No idea why anyone would be annoyed by that.

Banning players from taking on names is a slippery slope. What next? What name is "okay" and what name isn't?

However, if you were looking for an ignore function for CMs, it would be a whole different story. I see no reason not to allow palyers to avoid contact with those they want to avoid contact with.

Not in forums though. Wow. Just the thought of people blocking other people's forums posts gives me a headache.

j'bob June 24 2009 9:25 PM EDT

how bout a block on people who can't keep a freakin name. ;p
Yeah, I'm lookin at you llama.

Admin{CB1}Slayer333 [SHIELD] June 24 2009 9:53 PM EDT

This is funny, please have your comedy circuits checked.

Burton June 24 2009 10:33 PM EDT

How can you not find this funny? Be more relaxed about things. Because this is quite funny and a nice prank. :P

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] June 24 2009 11:17 PM EDT

i guess i would have thought it was funnier if i hadn't already seen the potential for someone doing it and was just waiting to see who the "clever" person would be.

if the community never sees it again, it will just be an attempt at an obviously humorous prank. if we start seeing it regularly then i feel that everyone will probably get annoyed with the jejune antics.

i really am not that upset, notice the smiley in my last post. i would like for this not to become a habit and possibly confuse new players. i don't think that jir targeted those though. i am willing to wait and see.

humor is actually a very strange thing though and you learn with experience that just because you think something is really quite funny, not everyone will. you also learn that if you do things to get people riled, live with it once they are.

i have played mmorpgs for around 12 years now and have seen it all. you kinda learn to see what is coming and that does take the fun out of it when it happens. my first game, people would dress up as vendors and you would click on them to sell items, the trade window was the same as the sell window, and new players would end up losing items to these people. i guess i have become jaded!

just remember kids, it is all fun and games until someone loses an eye and stay off my lawn!

j'bob June 25 2009 2:00 AM EDT

/me streaks across the dudes lawn...
in cleats!

{Wookie}-Jir.Vr- June 25 2009 2:11 AM EDT

Dude, was that 'Risk your life' back in the day? I still have like two 99s in that game, but I can't for the life of me remember my password. >_<

I didn't target any new players, for obvious reasons. I don't plan on continuing the prank any further as I've already achieved my desired effect.

I saw this happening the day the change was announced, I waited and waited, and finally was bored enough to just do it myself.

AdminShade June 25 2009 2:17 AM EDT

I see no problem.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] June 25 2009 9:23 AM EDT

the game i first saw it in was asheron's call. i have since seen it in other games though.

we really need to get j'bob some pants! ; )

QBOddBird June 25 2009 9:59 AM EDT

What is this "only Ranger didn't fall for it?"

I received your CM from my Chatmail page, so I didn't fall for it either. :P

Dudemus, the enemy of bored teenagers and the guardian of his lawn...and don't you dare touch his Gran Torino.

AdminNightStrike June 25 2009 10:12 AM EDT

A quick glance shows you sending out 20 of these. Please don't make us have to build a chatmail limit system. I guarantee you that whoever sparks the need for it will surely be the one paying for it.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] June 25 2009 1:44 PM EDT

^methinks he didn't think it was too funny either! ; )

QBRanger June 25 2009 1:56 PM EDT

I had a nice chuckle.

But I can see how others may have been upset over it.

How about we call it a day on these type of jokes and never have one like it again?
