Nightstrikes Idea/NUB sellers (in General)

Brakke Bres [Ow man] October 11 2009 8:22 AM EDT

In this thread: http://www.carnageblender.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=002te7

You will see this text in red under his text :
**Warning: This user currently has a New User Bonus. Consider this before making any deals.

Nice :)

Burton October 11 2009 8:27 AM EDT

Yes nice.
All NUBs are sellers, Great! Why don't you add the word multi in there too, sounds even better, will make us NUBs sound that much worse too, because after all, we are bad people ofcourse....... -_-
I'm glad you like the change, because about 80% of the other people don't.

Joel October 11 2009 8:28 AM EDT

Yes, I believe it will deter NUB selling a bit, but it is kind of annoying to those like me who will never sell out.

AdminShade October 11 2009 8:31 AM EDT

Unfortunately the forum cannot distinguish WTB from WTS without it being possible to fake things to make WTB not display this.

Cube October 11 2009 9:10 AM EDT

I'd just push for something a bit friendlier than red text.

QBRanger October 11 2009 9:10 AM EDT

I think Pink is a more calming color.

Levon [Clocked Out] October 11 2009 9:44 AM EDT

i think you could just put a prefix or postfix tag to the thread header to denote a NUB starting a thread in the for-sale section:

WTB Lesser Steel Familiar (in FS/WTB) [NUB]

-- or --

[NUB] WTB Lesser Steel Familiar (in FS/WTB)

you may not even have to change the colour of the text, and i think this way may be less offensive since it doesn't disfigure the posting

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] October 11 2009 11:42 AM EDT

This makes me uncomfortable. It's just not right that our new players are branded that way. Yes, the message could be gray, pink, whatever. It could be written as neutrally as possible but...Nothing you will do can make that kind of label right. Having a NUB is a way to welcome players here, not put them in their own barbed-wire fenced ghetto.

CB is a free market. A free market for vets. And a free market for NUBs. You can't start making distinctions between two classes of players on that market. It's a very bad way to control what's happening, and will only result in frustration and new players feeling like they're leprous or something.

It should be up to each individual to decide who they buy from, and if they find it morally acceptable to buy from NUBs. The solution to multis and sellout should come from elsewhere, in the game mechanics.

Not with this...branding. It's sick and wrong.

(CB1)WFP October 11 2009 11:46 AM EDT

you know who else branded people?...........the nazis..........they branded many people

don't be like a nazi......be like the late great Ray Charles, blind to world of prejudice

Kompton Kidd October 11 2009 11:48 AM EDT

^^ By that logic, that means I'm a jew.

[P]Mitt October 11 2009 11:49 AM EDT

And the same could be said about any boycott - whether it was disinvestment from South African apartheid, the Montgomery Bus boycott, or the American boycott of British goods in the revolution.

I, personally, am in support of Levon's idea. I believe the [NUB] tag would motivate them to stay beyond their stay of the NUB as they would feel "promoted" and it would seem they "grew up". And what child doesn't like to act older?

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] October 11 2009 12:06 PM EDT

I'm pretty sure most people already think like this: "Warning: This user currently has a New User Bonus. Consider this before making any deals." I mean, it's just common sense, NUBs have no "credit." I don't think this text is really needed, but I don't think it's insulting by any means. It wouldn't have insulted me when I was a NUB.

Lord Bob October 11 2009 12:44 PM EDT

"This makes me uncomfortable. It's just not right that our new players are branded that way."

I am inclined to agree. The big red warning text doesn't make it better.

Levon's idea is far superior.

QBOddBird October 11 2009 1:02 PM EDT

eh, I don't see anything wrong with it. I am not around often enough to know if any selling user is a NUB, nor do I have the inclination to check every FS post I see whose username I don't recognize.

If the little tag just read "NUB" I'd be fine with it, but I do like the distinguisher.

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] October 11 2009 1:12 PM EDT

I would much prefer a note on top of the page when you view a WTB/WTS thread that warns you about being careful who you trade with. Maybe add a link to a known multi sellout thread or something.

That way no one is pointed, and the buyers retain the responsibility to be careful about their trades.

Or Levon's idea. It's already better than what we have now.

Also, with all due respect, I think you **should** check usernames every time you trade with someone you don't recognize by name. It's common sense, and your duty as a buyer.

three4thsforsaken October 11 2009 1:14 PM EDT

I really don't like this. I think it is very important to make new players feel welcome, and branding them as a different kind of player doesn't do that.

I feel this is the first step to moving the community to a very hostile direction.

QBRanger October 11 2009 1:20 PM EDT

It would be great to have the following stats available:

Number of new players making an account every month.

Those that are still active 1 month, 3 months, 6 months later.

Those still active 1 year later.

Lochnivar October 11 2009 1:21 PM EDT

Since the current message is simply:
**Note: This user currently has a New User Bonus.

I fail to see how this is hostile.... really it is more like the big 'N' stickers they put on new drivers' cars around here (BC).

It could also serve as a warning to vets not to sell an expensive weapon to someone who thinks it'll help their FB mage...

Levon [Clocked Out] October 11 2009 1:27 PM EDT

meh, the only way the [NUB] tag will pose a problem is if the user is actually trying to hide the fact that he's a NUB, which doesn't make any sense unless it's a smash and grab account.. but that itself wouldn't make any sense since we can all see when you joined CB2 with a simple click of the button

if you added the [Canadian Dude] tag to my thread headings i wouldn't take offense or feel discriminated against unless i believed that you guys didn't like Canadians.. which would be silly for me to think in the first place!

three4thsforsaken October 11 2009 1:29 PM EDT

Well, the thing is, it is possible to see that a user has a NUB in their profile. Slapping a label on every FS and WTB post seems to be out of the laziness of every Vet, not for their actual protection.

{Wookie}-Jir.Vr- October 11 2009 4:09 PM EDT

3/4ths, This makes it easier. Easier does not always mean laziness is/was a factor... Anything that makes me have to click less is a good thing.

Yes!

I think most people are not so thick-skinned, for better or for worse.

And unfortunately it's far from silly to think that some people here don't like new players.

lostling October 11 2009 8:48 PM EDT

This change does not make sense to me... If someone actually cares whether the item is sold by a nub they would check it themself... If they cant be bothered to check they probably dont care anyway... Furthermore i dont like branding of any kind...

Ps rolling bonus anyone? :)

QBRanger October 11 2009 8:51 PM EDT

Most of us actually do like new players. I say new, not multi players.

We are against the super bonus free money given to them to help them catch up, when there are other ways that would not lend to multi and cheating. And still be fair to those that have played this game for years and are its chief support system.

But it seems more and more new players are selling out, which is of course not what we as a community want.

Lord Bob October 11 2009 10:00 PM EDT

"And unfortunately it's far from silly to think that some people here don't like new players."

It's not the new players some of us hate. It's the N*B.

QBRanger October 11 2009 10:17 PM EDT

When a staunch liberal as LB and a devout conservative as myself both agree on something, it must really be a bad thing.

Such is the N*B.

BluBBen October 14 2009 12:02 PM EDT

Thanks NS and Jon for taking in what the community says! :)

BluBBen October 14 2009 12:02 PM EDT

PS, look here for what I'm talking about:
http://www.carnageblender.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=002tqX

Burton October 14 2009 12:06 PM EDT

I thought NS agreed to make it less offensive..
Anyone else remember him saying that?

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 14 2009 12:08 PM EDT

and I suspect it's been determined that it's just offensive enough...

AdminNightStrike October 14 2009 12:53 PM EDT

No, it's just that my changes didn't make it to the new server. Sorry, I guess I missed this one. I cut it down to be a note, not a warning, and only the first sentence.

AdminNightStrike October 14 2009 12:55 PM EDT

Fixed.

AdminShade October 14 2009 12:56 PM EDT

Why in red and bold? Would black in bold look horrific enough?

AdminNightStrike October 14 2009 12:57 PM EDT

I dunno... I like red? It's CB's accent color?

AdminShade October 14 2009 1:00 PM EDT

It looks awfully bright, perhaps use the red colour of CB in bold then instead?

Demigod October 14 2009 1:44 PM EDT

Ditto with what Shade says. Black or "CB red" might be better.

BHT October 14 2009 1:54 PM EDT

I really don't see how this will change anything. If they want to sell-out they will. If they REALLY want to sell out they will have low prices, when It comes to low prices and saving money, most people wouldn't care if it was a NUB seller or not.
