I never found
Event Horizon to be very scary. Hilarious, more like.
As to movie selections, try Phantasm. The floating orbs and the quad shotgun make that movie.
28 days later/28 weeks later....Savage fast running zombies!
The idea of it freaks me out.
gah How could I forget a classic like Phantasm! Not to Mention the Hellraiser Series!
I should probably mention The Shining, just for good measure.
Everything Steven King is a Plus for me, Add in Clive Barker to taste >;-)

Carnival of Souls - Awesome movie, 1962; chick does some awesome, evil organ playing. Check it out!
Lawnmower Man - I still need to see the ones after the first one, but the first one is good!
The rest of you guys posted my other favorites.
Psycho and Alien are both pretty great.

For me it would be either Event Horizon or The Strangers.
I saw The Strangers with a friend of mine and she really didn't like it after all, it was much too scary for her ;p
We decided to watch Stay Alive, Mirrors and the Exorcist. Thanks guys.
/me wishes there was an edit button...
what about Jeepers Creepers 1 + 2?
For the record Shade, The Strangers was a terrible movie ;)

I agree.
I hate movies where the protagonists due incredibly stupid things. The Strangers falls into this category.
On the other hand, the remake of The Hills Have Eyes was a great movie.
The scariest movie I ever watched was Audition. The last 20 minutes with the piano wire was just frightening.
Other American movies that are disturbing have to be lead by The Devil's Rejects.
Strangeland was not very Scary but some of the scenes in it were some of the most disturbing I have seen in a long time.
The Haunting in Connecticut was a pretty good film.
I just watched Wrong turn 3 and it was soooo bad!
Poor acting, predictable plot, weak storyline, eye tormenting special effects, lame ending.
