I've been wondering what would be 'the standard' for making a smiley. I see people making them either way or both but what way do you usually make your most basic smiley. Note: this is about the basic smiley, not some of the more exotic ones and it's about orientation.

(However, it works better than :) at the end or within a set of parentheses. :) just makes it confusing :) )

There are quite a few academic articles about the use of smileys and how they've evolved. I read somewhere that while the standard European/American smileys usually emphasize the mouth or other facial parts, Japanese/Chinese smileys focus on the eyes. :-) versus ^_^ . Watch some anime and you'll see the same applies there.
