eBay-style auction bids (in Changelog)

Like it says on the auction page now,
"Your bid will automatically be increased up to the amount you give here. Only you will see what your real maximum bid is."
The bids-extending-auction-duration feature is thus no longer necessary and has been removed.

A few comments:
1) You can see what people's maxes are by viewing their transfer logs.
2) I was wondering if two people had the same max bid, who would win? The person who bid first, or would the two people take turns bidding the minimum increment until one that would exceed the max they set?
3) I think that you should be able to bid the buy now, so that if you get outbid enough, you just buy it, but if not, you save yourself some cash.

Okay, it seems you bid the minimum bid until one person would go over their max.
In the auctions, the bids are ordered by time, and the winning bid isn't always on top. could you, if it's not too much trouble, order the bids by amount? The chronological order thing could get very confusing, especially with long auctions (Black Market anyone?).

December 2 2006 11:08 PM EST
Sorry, how does this thing work? We put down a max amount that we are willing to pay for and the bidding will automatically activate when we get outbid up to the max amount that we have placed?
Swagger
December 2 2006 11:16 PM EST
No, you bid the minimum bid increment, and then other people do... and it goes on until no one (except one person) can bid any higher.

Yes, I don't have a fix for that yet.

"You outbid yourself when you try to increase your max bid."
Six of one, half a dozen of the other...

now to come up with a fix for the ability to see x-fer logs... only thing i can think of as a temp fix... is to not allow auction to bids to be shown...or put in a "?" instead of the dollar amount... but i have no idea how to do somethin

Jonathan, a question. It seems you bid by the minimum increment, and take turns. That would mean that the person who bid first wouldn't always win if two people had the same max, or even if the maxes were close.
An auction with a starting bid of 200, with 200 bid increments.
I bid 200, max of 1000
Someone bids 400, max of 1199
I outbid them to 600
They outbid me to 800
I outbid them to 1000
They can't bid 1200, I win.
This seems to be how it works, by the three stacks of seekers I bid on, and got outbid on.
One more thing, the difference in max bids is NEVER sent back, I set high bids (2x10k, and 1x5k) on stacks of seekers, so we could see how this worked. I never got the difference back either, from any of the auctions.

jon what happens if someone clicks the buy now... do they instantly get the item? or will it slowly increase until someone outbids them...

Either way, it seems he outbid me until he couldn't anymore, than i outbid him. But say my max was $5300 for that auction, he would have won, correct? Because I couldn't outbid him? Or would I have posted that bid first?

that's what Buy Now means, yes.
"in Hatchetman's transfer log, there are no transfers for those auctions. They're just not there."
That's right, the auction system knew he was going to be outbid so it didn't bother
transferring money out only to send it right back.
"But say my max was $5300 for that auction, he would have won, correct?"
No, the highest bid always wins. Just like eBay, this lets you "bid" less than the minimum increment under certain conditions.

"That's right, the auction system knew he was going to be outbid so it didn't bother transferring money out only to send it right back. "
I didn't know that it could do that, I assumed it had to transfer the money every time. I thought you had found a way to hide maximum bid transfers, , but then again, why bother keeping them hidden after an auction is done? I was, however, surprised you had found a way to do it so quickly, well... We'll see what happens.

If an item is currently at 2k and you place a bid of 60k, you will only be bidding 4k. Then, say in 3 hours, someone else bids 7k, you will automatically bid 9k.
It goes like this until either you win or are outbid (ie. someone bids more than 60k)

Is it designed so you don't get a 'you're outbid' notification when someone has a higher max bid than you?
I bid on 2 sets of ammo and NightStrike had higher max bids, I never received an outbid notification.
While you're poking around in the auction code, can you fix the bug where searching past auctions leaves out a bunch of past auctions?
Is there a way to arrange the fact that you can see the max bid of people, cause if someone bids 100k you just have to bid 100k and 1 to beat him. the max bid should be hidden.

I read through this thread to try to make sure this isn't a redundant comment, so I apologize if it is.
Suppose there is an item with minimum bid X with no bids on it yet. Suppose the minimum bid increment is Y. Now suppose I bid Z > X+Y. Whereas I would expect my first bid to be entered as just X, since I'm not bidding against anyone yet, the first bid is instead X+Y.

Another problem in the auctions. I changed my maximum bid for the steel familiar from 300k to 350k. Looks like it didn't just change my maximum bid amount, but actually out-bid myself, thus causing me to possibly pay more for it.
$315,000 (max bid: 350,000) bid by Wasp (Waspie Bank) on 6:00 PM EST
$300,000 (max bid: 300,000) bid by Wasp (Waspie Bank) on 5:50 PM EST
Any chance in changing it so that you can re-evaluate your highest bid when you have a change of heart, so that it will just change your highest bid and not out-bid your previous highest bid... that makes sense right? Cheers - Wasp

"I bid on 2 sets of ammo and NightStrike had higher max bids, I never received an outbid notification."
It doesn't CM you because it says on the bid confirmation page that you were outbid.
"can you fix the bug where searching past auctions leaves out a bunch of past auctions?"
If you want to give an example that doesn't work, I'll have a look.
"Whereas I would expect my first bid to be entered as just X, since I'm not bidding against anyone yet, the first bid is instead X+Y."
This should be fixed as of a few hours ago.
"This auction showed up in the main page and in searches at 2.5 mil. But the bidding page showed something different (2.625 mil)."
Probably someone bid on it between when you searched and when you clicked into the bidding page; it displays the same number on both now.
"Looks like it didn't just change my maximum bid amount, but actually out-bid myself"
Okay, I'll put this on my list.

To add to Wasps request, if you DO put it in, could you make it so that you can do it without that much money on your person. Um. Not worded right. I'll give an example.
I have 100k. I bid 100k max on something. I sell something and get an extra 50k. I now want a max bid of 150,k but I can't do it because I only have 50k on me - the rest is held by the auctioneer.
Well, to be honest, I don't actually know if this isn't already in place.
But yeah, adjusting the max bid would be very nice.

This might be nice to have, but I also know that is more of a convenience (i.e. I don't need flames to the effect of, "You're so lazy, go look at the expired auction.") When the auctioneer sends a chatmail to let you know that your bid won the auction, it might be nice to include in that chatmail what amount won the auction since you are only setting a max amount when you bid.
The auctioneer just gave me 300k O.o
I bid 300k for a HoD, but somebody else had set their max bid above it, so I did not get the 300k deducted from me. Then I bid 350k on it, and the 350k was deducted.
I just got outbid again, and it gave me the 300k and the 350k back. :/

The auction prices are a little confusing at the moment.
There is an MCM up for auction. The auctions-> rare items page
says the price is $787500 yet the highest bid is $771k.
The "Place a bid" option says $821k.
This is a little confusing.
Also, last night a stack of slayer arrows was at auction for about $420.
I bid on it at the base price and a little while later I was outbid with someone's bid of $820.
When I went in to update my bid, the default was to raise my bid to $480 which obviously, didn't cut the mustard.
I could have done it manually but the option of raising my bid to something too low to win surprised me.

Two inqueries...
The "Place next bid" is displaying the lowest bid placed on the helms and not the next possible bid.
And shouldnt Proteus be winning this auction? Same bid for us both but he bid first, so he SHOULD be winning, right?

I kind of got the idea of how this whole thing works now, except for the time rearranging... ;)

hmm, yes, that was backwards. fixed.
sory to bother again Jon, but i dont think auctioneer gave me the 250k back from that auction you had to fix. i have 40k less (from bidding in another auction) than last night when i was "winning" the auction, but now im not winning and i should have around $5,050,000
only one problem though, i cant really prove it now, cuz i think when you fixed the auction it got rid of my xfer of 250k to the auctioneer. =/
Bid increases are still transparent.
Is this intentional?

smallpau: the auction system knew you were already outbid so it didn't bother
transferring money out only to send it right back. Then it displayed you as the winning bidder, which was the bug; the behind-the-scenes stuff was working correctly.

"Bid increases are still transparent."
no, they aren't

Can anyone give us a summary of this change? I don't want to have to read through 100+ posts.

CB Auctions now function like ebay auctions:
You place a bid which is the highest amount you would like to pay for the item. However, your actual bid is just next highest increment. For instance, pretend there is a 1 mil NW dagger in auctions with a minimum bid of 100k. If I place my max bid of 300k, this doesn't mean I bid 300k right away. Instead, I bid 100k and if someone outbids me, then my bid is automatically increased up to my max bid. There 100+ posts in this thread were merely bug fixes and tweaks. If you still don't understand, try bidding on an item and see what happens.

The auto-bidding thing is still confused. This is the situation with some more testing I am doing:
Carnage Blender » Auctions » My Bids
Winning
$741 for 541 Slayer Arrows [15x1] (+0) ends in 00:31:00
Outbid
$731 for 530 Slayer Arrows [15x1] (+0) (currently $730) ends in 00:31:00
Finished Auctions
Back to Auctions Home
So, apparently I'm losing the second auction, or so it appears to say, but according to the actual auction itself:
Carnage Blender » Auctions » One Auction
530 Slayer Arrows [15x1] (+0) for sale by auctioneer
Wiki: Slayer Arrow
Ends in 00:30:34
Net worth: $531
Net worth is a measure of how much has been spent on upgrades, not of market value.
Actions
* Increase your bid to $[731] (You have $220,238)
* View expired auctions for Slayer Arrow
Bids
* $731 (max bid: 731) bid by Yukk (Reda Luu) on 7:20 PM EST
* $730 bid by Ice (Ites) on 7:32 PM EST
But I already bid $731 as my initial maximum and this page says I'm winning, and I don't think trying to bid $731 will work.

fixed criterion for listing bids as winning in My Bids
A Mithril Cuirass [35] auction is in the rare items list of auctions... may be wrong but that isn't a rare item is it?

A MC is, of course, a "rare' item.
However, it just has no use in the CB2 world. Similar to the ELS or BoTH, there are other items of the same class that do the job much better.
An adam gives far more protection.
A MCM has no penalties and is almost as good.
A TSA is the choice for non TOA/Heavy AC tanks.
There is really no use for the MC anymore. I tried to use it on my mage to see if it would help lower the damage vs seekers, however, the -8% to DD was too much for the little more AC.
I hope this was just a fluke then.

Ok, just a question... I put up some Ex Shots on Auction for 10k min 29,999 BIN... So... two minutes later someone won the bid for 10k and I was wondering if they actually BINd it, but it only showed a 10k bid? I looked in transfers and the transfer was "secret"... any clues?
