Why would have keep those items but change the names?
I think he had other ideas in mind.
I would love some new items, new top tier items make things more interesting.

Bringing in a new item will:
1. Spice up the game
2. Pull money back into the game
3. Be a good time to delete the worthless existing items or nerf a stat

And a weird bit of trivia... I just realized that the only item I remember being created was one that was called the "Holocaust Cloak." If I remember correctly, that name lasted all of two days before being re-named Balrog Flame back in CB1.
It was never really released with that name.

The original Cloak of Balrog Flame was released as the Holocaust Cloak.
Incidently, the name of the Cloak from the Princess Bride.
Due to some, complaining, over how close the name was to The Holocaust, it was renamed to a more Tolkien esk name of the Cloak of Balrog Flame.
