T36: The Gridiron (in Contests)
Welcome to the gridiron. You and 12 of your fellow blenders will engage in a ruthless battle for supremacy.
This is a team tournament, each team has the following positions to be filled.
Quarterback (1)
Center (1)
Offensive Guard (2)
Offensive Tackle (2)
Halfback (1)
Fullback (1)
Wide Receiver (2)
Tight End (2)
Kicker (1)
Your team will earn points based on the score of each player, using the following model.
Quarterback related points:
Every 50k score the quarterback has earns 6 points.
If the kicker can match the quarterback's score, each 6 point gain becomes 7 points. For every 50k score the kicker has below the quarterback, one of these extra points is deducted. The kicker must match the cumulative score of the quarterback, including score gained from synergies. (QB score = WR score + QB score)
For every 300k score a wide receiver has, 100k is added to the quarterback's score.
The center must match the non-cumulative score of the Quarterback. For every 100k score below the quarterback, the opposing team gains 7 points.
Halfback related points:
Every 200k score that the halfback has earns 7 points.
Every 200k score that the full back has adds 100k score to the halfback.
Scores of the Offensive Guards, and Offensive Tackles are added to the halfback's score.
The Tight end's score is added to the Full backs' score.
All scores will be rounded to the closest 50k for scoring reasons.
There are no tattoos permitted, all else is OK.
Your character name MUST follow the following setup:
[Teamname]Yourname[Position (QB, HB, FB, OG, OT, C, WR, TE)]
The tournament will begin on the 7th at noon, and end on the 14th at noon. You have until the 6th to post your FULL roster. First two people to request a team will be able to set the team name and their own position, as well as accept recruits.
There will be a BA cap of 3000 and 200 starting BA.
Prizes:
The winning team will distribute the following prizes among its members, any prize disputes will be settled via a random draw run by myself.

Wait a minute... are we doing Power-I formation, or split backs? And in either case, how can we explain the double Tight End thing?
I'm in for Team Awesome. And I guess I'll play halfback, unless the captain would prefer otherwise.
No real football explanation for it, just opening up more slots for players :)

With a max of 13 players (?) we still need 6 more...who's in?
Shade and BluBBen are likely on board with TA, I'll make sure it's cool with OB.
/me needs to read all the posts fully
"If you are not on a team I will have to retire your character for fairness, if there are significant amounts of people who wish to participate but both teams are full, I will open up more slots per team."

Novice at Center
OB at QB
Hakai at Tight End
Hatchet at Tight End
Kyle at Halfback

Shade may join TA if he likes :)

to whoever conceived this, I think it's a great idea. Imo it would've been even better if there was some sort of interaction between teams - eg. if a defensive tackle has >80% victories over the other team's QB (over say 200 battles), then the team with the strong tackler gets points for having a good "blitz"... (I know there aren't any D tackles, just making a point).
Anyway, this is well timed and should be pretty interesting.

Q:
Since "anything goes" is it legal to use a normal character to bid on something in auctions to prevent a T character from getting it?
Q:
Is it legal to ask someone else, not in the tourney to buy an item from a T character at an inflated, but still within normal limit price?
i could've sworn that slayer made a rule regarding auction manipulation for the benefit of t characters, i cannot find the post nor can i find it in the tournament wiki pages though. : (
From the General Rules Guideline:
"These rules are meant to prevent a players normal wealth and status from affecting the outcome of a tournament. If you do something to affect the outcome of a tournament with a non-tournament character, or with non-tournament money, you may be disqualified."
here is one quote from the t33 rule thread, it never seems to have made it into the general rules though:
"since you can now disenchant that money is even more easily converted to liquid cash, and many of the tournaments have pretty large bonuses attached to them, I am going to say no, you should not be auctioning items off of your Tourney char to be purchased by a normal character at any time."
Q:
Since "anything goes" is it legal to use a normal character to bid on something in auctions to prevent a T character from getting it?
A: No.
Q:
Is it legal to ask someone else, not in the tourney to buy an item from a T character at an inflated, but still within normal limit price?
A: Dude brings up a good point - I have said something on this before, and it will be added to the wiki. In general, tourney characters should not even be putting items up to auction in the first place.
QBRanger
February 10 2009 1:53 PM EST
As far as T characters not putting items in auctions let me bring up a few points.
1) I bought a light xbow to test. 25k worth and now cannot sell it to the store. So auctions is the only way for me to try to get some money back. Perhaps someone will buy it since it sells to the store for 21k.
It is incredible I could not even sell my base whip back to the store.
2) Right now my T character is a mage. I bought AGs for it. Now I want to be a tank or possible tank. So what should I do with those AGs? They are worth over 1 million. Do I eat the cost and call it a day? That would be complete garbage.
I'll work on a solution for this, we'll see.
Fatil1ty
February 10 2009 2:04 PM EST
I would more than willing to purchase the AG's from ranger...:)
a separate tournament store that slayer can stock with specific or general items that will always buy items back would be the best solution especially if it could be coded so that tournament characters could only use this store.
QBOddBird
February 10 2009 2:10 PM EST
I think that would be really nice, dudemus.
Especially for those tournaments that require use of certain items.
Soul Eater
February 10 2009 2:10 PM EST
So would I, I need AG's.
it appears i should've posted the whole quote from slayer from the other thread for those asking for ranger's gloves. so here it is in its complete form:
"3D's response is pretty much the reason against auctioning off rare items from a tournament character. Tournament money is supposed to remain separate from normal money as much as possible, since you can now disenchant that money is even more easily converted to liquid cash, and many of the tournaments have pretty large bonuses attached to them, I am going to say no, you should not be auctioning items off of your Tourney char to be purchased by a normal character at any time."
BadFish
February 10 2009 2:17 PM EST
I think the people who were willing to buy Ranger's AG's were thinking about buying them with tournament money.
Unless I misunderstood them, and/or your post.
Soul Eater
February 10 2009 2:23 PM EST
I want it for my tourney character.
i may have misunerstood as well. sorrry if i did.
adding to the store idea. it would just need to have base items of each type allowed in the tournament and selected by slayer and just each item as it is bought so that it is always stocked(including lesser tats if allowed). it would also have the items availalbe that it had repurchased for the duration of the tournament.
it could buy back items at the same rate as the current store without restrictions. it would relist them at the same rate as is done with the current stores as well. there would also be no purchase time limits as we have now.
to clarify the earlier post, only t chars could use this store and it would be the only allowed trade method for them.
There is no way for tournament characters to transfer between eachother.
Ok, this is the rule that will go into the wiki:
You may auction any non-rare item as a tournament character, in addition, you may auction rares, as long as they are fully disenchanted.
In addition, I will ask Jon if perhaps the resell to store for non rares can be reconsidered.
Fatil1ty
February 10 2009 2:26 PM EST
I think it would be ideal if you could transfer between your teammates during a tourney. This would allow for better teamwork and use of money and heightened interaction among teams. That takes care of the reselling of items as well (assuming others on your team want em)
good solution slayer, especially since it needs no new coding! ; )
QBRanger
February 10 2009 2:45 PM EST
Nice solution.
Please twist Jon's arm to let us resell non-rares back to the store.
i was going to add to the wiki, but need a clarification:
"You may auction any non-rare item as a tournament character, in addition, you may auction rares, as long as they are fully disenchanted."
should that first part read "You many not auction any non-rare item..." or are you actually going against the earlier rule now?
Non rare auctions are fine.

You can't transfer items to or from a tourney character.
Can I ask something about Ranger's complaint?
I thought the whole point of a tournament, with the prizes and such was to make you really think through all your decisions. And if that is truly the case, shouldn't you be extra responsible for each action?
QBOddBird
February 11 2009 1:58 AM EST

Yeah OB, I'm serious. You have to follow the rules! I don't know why, stupid isn't it?
There is a difference between a rule that intentionally creates choices and strategy, and one that creates inconveniences and compounds the poor design of the way tourney characters can use stores.
QBOddBird
February 11 2009 10:50 AM EST
I'm not sure anyone was referring to anything that had to do with the store, Slayer.
QBRanger
February 11 2009 11:27 AM EST
I think people are moaning about my problem.
If it is so problematic, I can keep the freaking alatar's and we can enact that rule for the next tourney.
Remember--- Don't poke the bear.
Yah, ranger's right, it's not a problem with his choices merely a problem with the setup. I couldn't sell back my bow, sword, shield or even cuirass to the store, all of which I bought from the store. Also, when you stated tourney characters shouldn't sell to the store, you should check out what this message says "A Steel Cuirass [29] (+7) (tournament characters may not sell valuable items directly to the store. use auctions instead)" So, shouldn't we use auctions, or that's what the game tells you to do.
QBRanger
February 11 2009 12:58 PM EST
I think they are referring to my other problem. buying a rare and not being able to change ones mind and auction it back.
A huge difference from hiring minons at the wrong time.
TheHatchetman
February 11 2009 1:35 PM EST
Far as non-rares go I'm pretty sure nobody has a problem with them being sold to the store...
Auctions are touchy due to the ability to inflate the price. Looking at both rosters, I'm not seeing anybody that I think would ever even attempt to cheat the system this way, but expressly allowing it kinda leaves it wide open for abuse.
TheHatchetman
February 11 2009 1:47 PM EST
And yeah, my hiring comparison was a bit of a stretch, but stillalong the lines of the point it was trying to convey which was that if you're going to spend about a third of your potential tournament money on something, you'd better be damn sure that either a) it's worth it, or b) you don't need the money for your end plan. I'm of the opinion that with only a week to play, you should have some idea of how your final setup will be before you even create the char.
The importance of every single BA is intensified, hiring times are key, and less than 1k XP can mean the difference between a win and a loss. Why shouldn't purchases work the same way?
QBRanger
February 11 2009 2:19 PM EST
Strat changes occur all the time. What works or you think will work in the beginning may be utter garbage at the end.
To be stuck with a rare, and an expensive one, based upon a theory of what will or not work is a poor way to run a tourney.
With minions and MPR, one can hire and unhire, train and untrain all day. There is no basis for a comparison of minions to rares that makes any sense to me.
But if this is how CB wants tourneys to be run, thats cool. Just do not expect much participation with these Draconian type of rules.
IMO, tourneys should be just like normal play. Expect for it is a closed system and any abuses have to be dealt with immediately.

"To be stuck with a rare, and an expensive one, based upon a theory of what will or not work is a poor way to run a tourney. "
Poor way to participate* the person running the tourney doesn't decide whether or not you will purchase a rare.

February 11 2009 8:46 PM EST
What's the current score?
QBRanger
February 11 2009 8:48 PM EST
OB,
We have a tough enough time getting people to play in tournaments. Unless the rewards are outstanding.
Rules like this one will stop me from playing in most future ones.
I like T characters as a way to test things out. In addition to the other obvious reasons.
But to make a rule that you have to choose your strategy at the beginning of a tournament and stay with it is garbage. Choose early or lose all the NW of equipment you buy, is contrary to the way CB is.
CB is a fluid game where one gets to change strategies and even minions. At a cost of course, but this draconian rule takes a lot of the fun out of tournaments.
And others who I have chatted with, feel the same way. We may be a minority, however I do have facts that rules like these discourage people from playing.
I have not played in a tourney for a while. I had no idea how much money one can make with such a huge bonus. So I thought mage would be the way to go. So I bought the AGs. Now I find I should have enough money to play a tank. But with this rule, it is impossible for me to try to play one as I would be almost 1M CB behind.
Is this fair that all those who participated in past tourneys get such a huge advantage? I can see the Yes answer as "we have played and our experience matters". However, how does that encourage people to start playing tournaments?
If that is the rule for this tourney, so be it. But I can tell you, it will likely be the last one I will play in. While I like to plan ahead, things are so fluid that the inability to change on the fly is a big negative to my future participation.
QBRanger
February 11 2009 8:52 PM EST
And OB,
I hold no animosity to you or Hatch or anyone else who posted about this rule in the thread.
It is the rule and I did not know about it before I started the tourney, which is my bad 100%. I think it is a poor one that hurts participation in the game, but that is my point of view only. Shared by a few others that let me know via chats here and there.
I am, however, trying to state why this rule is bad and makes for a bad tourney experience. Just that.
QBOddBird
February 11 2009 8:52 PM EST
"But to make a rule that you have to choose your strategy at the beginning of a tournament and stay with it is garbage. Choose early or lose all the NW of equipment you buy, is contrary to the way CB is. "
But see, that's not the issue here. Choosing to purchase a rare to go with your strategy is not a necessity, and choosing your strategy at the beginning and sticking with it is not at all a rule. I've changed from mage to tank multiple times this tournament - as have several others - without worry about NW lost or gained.
You're trying to build an argument with no basis. Just because you bought a pair of AG doesn't mean you MUST stay mage the entire game, nor does buying a Mageseeker mean I may never be anything but a tank for the remainder of this tournament. HOWEVER, it is a gamble of NW toward one end of the spectrum with the expectation that the strategy you are putting such resources toward will be superior.
I hate to channel sut, but you're building a strawman argument - the one you are arguing is not truly even related to the debate at hand.
Soul Eater
February 11 2009 8:54 PM EST
At the begining of this tourney I scraped my strat after I had already gotten to like 70k score and went all the way back down to 20k because I went to single minion then I decided I wanted to go back to 3 minion so I had to build myself back up so honestly, I think since I had to do it I don't find it fair that someone else gets a free ride just because he whines that he's gonna lose xp.
QBRanger
February 11 2009 9:00 PM EST
OB,
That is fine.
I am not building a straw man whatever you call it.
I am stating my opinion as to why this rule stinks. To go tank now, in this tourney would put me 1M NW way behind. Then if that does not work, where are I? With a compound at 2M NW that is a paperweight. To be able to sell items makes for a more fluid transition to other strategies.
With all the money T characters get, rares are 100% part of the tourney. And in some cases essential to winning.
That Mageseeker you have is a killer item. One that may very well win the tourney for your team.
But to say my arguments have no basis is to not even read or understand them. Analogous to the "I am rubber, you are glue" type of statement.
Take a few minutes to actually read what I typed. I understand it is the rule. However, again, I will likely not participate in many more tourneys due to it. Which may make most people very happy. :)
QBOddBird
February 11 2009 9:04 PM EST

The rule that you can't make multiple accounts stinks to a lot of people, but that does not make it a poor rule.

I see, thanks.
What is the logic behind not being able to buy things in auctions from other folks in the tourney?
QBRanger
February 12 2009 1:51 PM EST
To prevent shuffling of money.
IE, I put a compound bow with NW of 1k in auctions and my teammate then buys it for 1M CB2.
That is an extreme example but imagine my Ags being sold. I paid 900k for them, but if someone would buy them for 1.75M would that be so out of line?
I mean like our current situation, you've bid on a Gi I put up.. this is disallowed by the current rules.
QBRanger
February 12 2009 2:28 PM EST
I thought you were typing about a T character putting up an auction.
I bid on that auction after I saw another character in the Tourney bid on it. So I thought it was then legal.
I have no idea anymore about what is right/wrong/other in tournies.
So if someone who was not in the tourney put up an item for auction I could bid on it, however, if someone participating in the auction puts up an it I cannot?
What the heck?
QBRanger
February 12 2009 2:29 PM EST
And if I violated the rules of the auction, then DQ me from the tourney.
Seems I have a few CM's blasting my bid as something evil and morally wrong.
Evil? hahah
Slayer made clear earlier that it wasn't a DQ offense... just a fine.
if the system allows bidding on tournament auctions by tournament characters and it is against the rules now, can we at least get some kind of flag on auctions to make it easier to miss the ones that are created by tournament characters?
AdminShade

And if I violated the rules of the auction, then DQ me from the tourney.
FYI: Slayer stated very clearly that bidding on an item with your Tournament Character on an item which is being auctioned by another Tournament Participant is not allowed.

Tournament Rules
Please read and abide by all these rules - some of you have already broken one in particular, involving the use of auctions to transfer items. Disqualification will not occur, however both users involved will be fined the price of the auction transaction.
I myself and a few other have been fined for these things during this tournament already so I cannot imagine you being treated differently. You cannot say that you were not warned on beforehand.
QBRanger
February 12 2009 2:44 PM EST
So will the fine be over 400K?
ANd I assume all those who bid in that auction will be fined as well.
QBRanger
February 12 2009 2:45 PM EST
And I 100% agree with dudemus' suggestion.
Put a flag on these auctions.
I did not even notice who put up the auction, I just looked at the item in question and decided it was a good deal.
AdminShade
February 12 2009 2:49 PM EST
I also did not notice who auctioned it and that was my own fault.
Also Kyle should also be fined, naturally.
The height of the fine however, is up to Slayer I think.
If you do not win the auction, no harm, no foul - because I outbid every other player who had similar circumstances, I will do the same here.
I will see what can be done about having a flag placed on auctions involving tournament players.
QBRanger
February 12 2009 3:02 PM EST
As a personal fine I will buy the CGI in auctions (provided nobody outbids me) and then give it to Tourney Prizes.
AdminShade
February 12 2009 3:15 PM EST
Problem then is that you can't outbid your own tourney char and you can't send it to TP however... :$
But it's a kind gesture nonetheless.
He bid with his normal character, Shade.
QBRanger
February 12 2009 3:18 PM EST
If my T character had the highest bid my regular character cannot overbid it.
However.... Since Slayer overbid my T character, my normal one then overbid him. No reason he should use his own CB2 for my mistake.
The nice gesture was Slayers.

KW, no, Tal is incorrect. You may still keep fighting:
Largest Blow 1,817
Battles Total 3,030
... Challenged 2,581
... Won 2,328
Winning Streak 11
The number that can't exceed 3,000 is in bold. The battles total is your battles challenged plus all the battles other people have challenged against you.
However, I recommend that you at least stop fighting for today, as you also do not want to be the first to reach 3,000, with 2 days to go. Join Awesome Huddle if you have any further questions, KW.

Any Idea what the current score is?
Slayer, I have a couple of questions about scoring, if you'll indulge me.
1. Does rounding to the nearest 50k take place before adding scores? (For example, would a Tackle with 28k score add 50k score to a halfback, or add 28k, to then be rounded with the halfback's total score?)
2. "For every 300k score a wide receiver has, 100k is added to the quarterback's score." There are two WRs per team. If each WR has approximately 150k score, are they added together to make 300k, therefore adding 100k to the QB's score, or are they both insignificant in the total?
3. "Every 200k score that the full back has adds 100k score to the halfback."
If an FB score is, say 500k, does this add 200k score to the HB, or 250k? In other words, is it strictly 100k for every 200k, or is it just half?
I guess this could also be asked of the WRs.
